From the Heart

Gray clouds hang o're the woodland deep,

yet Autumn holds a vibrant stand;

wind whirls through canopies and sweeps

bright leaves from boughs across the land

and out where shadowed fields expand;

'tis joy beheld in leafen spark-

no weather changes His command.

The praising forest cries out 'hark!'...

and sings midst rain as though itself a meadow lark...

(a Spenserian stanza poem)
