                    Spring

Today, first bloom of rose declared,
“It’s spring!” and then a fragrance aired
Throughout the garden everywhere-
An answer to a winter’s prayer.

A winter’s eve some months ago,
The wood and thorn were death in snow,
The shifting wind and grip of frost
Exacted winter’s mighty cost.

More darkness occupied the day,
A whip of cold kept buds at bay,
When only hope could seed and flower,
There came a prayer, a warmer power.

And in this out-of-season Spring,
A bud could bloom, a heart could sing
To melt the icy frost so near,
And wait for spring to reappear.

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
