            The Centurion

When I order my men to come, they come,
When I order my men to go, they go,
Whatever I order my servant, I know,
Will be promptly and honestly done.

Great Healer, You order the blind eyes to see,
And You order the lame legs to walk,
You can order a mute mouth to talk,
Whatever You order will be.

My servant has given me more
Than his mere obedience gives,
By his fealty, my loyalty lives,
Yet I can’t order death from his door.

My Lord, I am like an eye without sight,
A leg that has ceased to move forward,
A voice of a dissonant chord,
Unmighty in need of Your might.

Please heal my servant, deathly ill,
Despite my weak, unworthy plea
Just say the word and it will be,
Just say the word and it will be.

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
