Fidelity

           Fidelity

In Ashdod, they imprison You,
A prisoner of war,
The covenant between us two
Is in our midst no more.

Our temple echoes with my prayers
I cry out to Your throne,
My heart painstakingly forbears
My grief until You’re home.

At times, my prayer has not a word,
It’s lodged within my throat,
I am a sad and songless bird
Without a happy note.

Return, oh Lord, to us who wait,
Return and then we’ll be
Your children who will celebrate
Our King who sets us free.

Although our sweetness they ransack
Like honey to a bear,
I’ve heard that now they’ve brought You back,
The bee stung everywhere.

Behold! We quit our foreign gods,
Ba’al we praise no more,
Your presence magnifies the odds
For victory in war.

Our enemy falls like dead leaves
In winter off a tree,
You are the God my heart believes
Is rooted deep in me.

Our temple echoes with my praise
To You who are my King,
Behind me are my songless days,
Of You today I sing!

Your people, though, in victory
Still ask You for a king,
They lay upon my heart their plea,
To You, their plea, I bring.

You say to give them what they ask,
For You, I follow through,
It is, for me, a shameful task,
I have no king, but You.

The poem is about an Old Testament character. If I have given accurate clues, can you figure out who?

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
