Life-long Lessons

I am still learning to be a Christian today
as I did as an eight-year-old child
walking the aisle of Hawesville Baptist,
confessing sin, and praying with the preacher,
admitting, "I need Jesus in my heart."

I am still learning to be a servant today
as I did in college, at Glendale Chapel
teaching precious children that Jesus loves them,
reading the Bible and finding His mandates
like this one, "as you go, tell them about Me."

I am still learning to be a witness today
as I did in my twenties at Calvary,
University Baptist and Lewis Lane,
playing the piano, singing in the choir
lifting up the only One worthy of praise.

I am still learning of ministry today
as I did in my thirties at Graceland
visiting folks in nursing homes, hospitals,
jails, and schools, discovering God's command,
"Love each other just as I have loved you."

I am still learning about believing today
as I did at Wesley Chapel's UMC,
supporting missions, sponsoring youth camps,
preparing food, selling rummage, forgiving
and being forgiven of foolish sins.

I am still learning how to follow Christ today
at sixty-five at Sellersburg FBC
studying the mysteries of grace, knowing
that it is what Christ has done that keeps me safe,
awaiting His call, "Come on up to my place."

About the Poet
Growing older with some pains and discomfort, graying hair, glasses, partial plate and hearing aids but with complete assurance of my eternal domain. Saved by choice by Gods free grace by Jesus life, death and resurrection. Born and bred in the Bluegrass State for 24 years, I crossed the Ohio River and became a Hoosier forever thereafter until that time God calls me to my heavenly home. Christian for fifty-five plus years. Church musician and SS teacher for most all of my Wednesdays and Sundays. Public school teacher for thirty-six school terms; retired with a class now of three grandchildren off and on during the week. Wife for half my life to the same superman. Mama to two unique sons. Mother-in-law to a fine daughter; Nana to one darling girl and two handsome guys. God has blessed me abundantly; thank you, Father. God quiets my hackles; God quickens my heart; God quells my hunger. Blessed be His holy name.
