Lasting Values

How would it be, have you ever thought,
If the things you have, you then had not?
Would you find the past a sorrowful waste,
And regret that you lived your life in haste?

What would you see, in looking back?
What did you offer? What did you lack?
Has all the happiness you've sought,
Dwell in things that can't be bought?
Or, could it be, you've over-rated
All that you've accumulated?

It's human to reach out for more
And wish for what we haven't got.
But...how would it be? Just give it some thought,
If the things you have, you then had not!
