GOD SPEAKS TO US THROUGH HIS HOLY WORD
19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! - James 2:19(New King James Version).
GOD'S PROMISE TO US FROM HIS HOLY WORD
(The Apostle Paul wrote while in prison) 8 "Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God, 9 who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began, 10 but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, 11 to which I was appointed a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles. 12 For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day." - 2 Timothy 1:8-12(New King James Version).

NOTES
Today has been mostly cloudy in McAlester, Oklahoma, with a high temperature of 81 degrees and a low temperature of 60 degrees which is the current temperature. I had lunch with Charley and Bill. I came home and prepared some bills and a birthday card for my son Ron and went to the post office and mailed them. I took my nap in the middle of the afternoon. Just as I was getting ready to doze off the doorbell rang. The lady next door and another lady wanted to pick some mulberries from a tree in my yard. I told them that was fine as I don't pick those mulberries. I let the birds have them. I went outside with the cats at 6:00 p.m. and stayed until after 7:00 p.m. It was cloudy and nice and cool with a nice breeze blowing from the north direction. Thanks so much for your e-mails and thanks for reading the Good Things. I heard from Libby today who lives in the state of Washington. She said she really liked the cat story. She is the wife of Jamie MacFarland who attended our church for a few weeks a few years ago while he was on a work detail here cleaning up from an ice storm. Your comments are always welcome either pro or com.
The cats are fine. Rascal just came in from outside. Little Girl must be outside as I don't see her anywhere. Emmy and Leo have been through the den this evening. Tony from across the street has been here. All of the cats have been seen this evening including Lucy, the stray. Little Girl just came in and is now on the sofa. I will see you next time,

“Stay Close to Home…”
“Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well.” – Proverbs 5:15
Do you recognize these words? “No lusting after your neighbor's house—or wife or servant or maid or ox or donkey. Don't set your heart on anything that is your neighbor's.”
Those words are taken from Exodus 20:17, (MSG) the last of the Ten Commandments. It is the one that instructs us to, "not covet." Coveting, simply put, is desiring or longing for something that is not theirs to have. Whether it is an object, a person, or a position, coveting takes without consideration for others. Coveting is selfish...self-centered, lazy and unproductive.
Those who covet often feel as if they have been cheated...they are owed something and regardless of the means or who it hurts, will seek those ill-perceived pursuits. What Solomon is saying is that we need to pursue greater goals--and do it the right way!,br /> Some stories of personal achievement result in Oscars” being awarded to actors who portray the lead characters in motion pictures (“The Blind Side.”). Other stories do not. This is one of those. The athlete’s name is Jimmy Graham. ,br /> Graham grew up in Goldsboro, a small town in North Carolina. His home life was described as being “the most troubling of circumstances.” His older sister was placed in a group home until she was 18. His mother did not play a significant role in his life; his father played none.
But a church did. It was the Abundant Life Church, located about two miles from Graham’s home. The staff writer said the church “is where believers gather, and it is where Jimmy Graham found people who believed in him.” As a high-school student he knew he could count on the church for a free hot meal when he needed one. “It was like everybody there believed in me,” Jimmy recalled. “They told me I was too smart and too talented. My whole life, I always felt different and out of place, and I finally felt like people cared about me and people wanted me to succeed.”
The Boston Globe summarized the role of the church in Jimmy’s life: “A teenager basically raising himself, Graham gained a foundation through his weekly visits to the church. He discovered fellowship, a pastor who would become his high school basketball coach, a guardian who gave him stability in an unstable life, and a congregation joyful with encouragement.”
Carlos Peralta was a pastor at the church and coached basketball at a private high school on the side. He took Jimmy under his wing and mentored him in things he needed to know to play basketball. Another member of the church—Becky Vinson—was a single mother and Gulf War veteran. She became Jimmy’s legal guardian before his sophomore year of high school and raised him along with her own daughter in a very modest trailer. Things were very tight financially; for two years they didn’t have heat and had to be creative to stay warm in the winters.
Jimmy was tall and athletic, and by the time he was a senior in high school, he was offered a scholarship to play basketball at the University of Miami. In four years at Miami, Graham developed a reputation as a proficient shot blocker. Professional basketball teams from overseas came calling, and the offers reached six figures. But Jimmy had an “itch” to play football. So, instead of playing professional basketball this year, he agreed to play football for the 2009 season at Miami. At 6 feet 6 inches and 260 pounds, he was an awesome tight end, scoring 5 touchdowns in 13 games for the Hurricanes. Pro football scouts found him to be an interesting prospect. Analysts said it is likely Jimmy would be selected in the middle rounds of the National Football League draft.
Pastor and writer John C. Maxwell says, “Learn to say ‘no’ to the good so you can ‘yes’ to the best.” That could have been Jimmy Graham’s goal in life. It certainly was reflected in his decision to turn down a lucrative offer to play professional basketball so he could continue his quest to play football. It is one thing to say ‘no’ to the bad, but it is something much different to say ‘no’ to the good. Setting a high standard for oneself calls for reaching past immediate gains to pursue a higher goal. Jimmy Graham started very early in search of his dream. He could have settled for lesser goals, blaming his circumstances and lack of opportunity. But he was driven to succeed. As a middle-school student he wanted to play football. But practices were held 5 miles away, and there was no one to drive him there and back. So he ran the 5 miles to practice and walked home afterwards. He never complained. It wasn’t until one of the coaches noticed that Jimmy was walking home each day after practice that rides were arranged for him. That’s why Jimmy Graham will succeed in life—he’s got higher goals to reach!,br /> Today, Jimmy Graham is playing for the New Orleans Saints in the National Football League, and considered to be one of the best players at his position. He could have looked at his circumstances—his poor surroundings and lack of positive influence in his early life and sought less than noble pursuits. But thanks to some great spiritual mentors and leaders—a life was changed.

“Strength in Numbers…But Always Hope in Christ.”
“And I was soon in serious trouble in the assembly of God’s people.” – Proverbs 5:14
Solomon has been talking us through this chapter regarding how to handle temptation and seduction. His instruction in this regard is pretty blunt—don’t do it! Don’t go near it. Stay as far away as possible for it you are caught, it will take from your dignity, honor, strength (physical and spiritual) and according to this verse, it creates a separation from one of our strongest resources…God’s people, the Body of Christ. When that occurs, we lose an element of protection that was designed to help us when we need it most—when face to face with the enemy! But there is another element to this that we must first consider. We’ve always heard the phrase, “There is strength in numbers.” I’ve often thought of that just in terms of working together but I am also beginning to see it work in terms of staying strong spiritually! When are strongly tied-in with the “Body” of Christ, the probability of having temptations and seductions is lessened greatly because we are working for each other and praying for each other! David’s biggest fall came at a time when he was separated from his people and his army. “In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king’s men and the whole Israelite army.”(2nd Samuel 11:1) This was a self isolation. He was not where he should have been and not with the people he should have been with and it was at that time he would have his ill-fated relationship with Bathsheba. What does that say about neglecting the “assembly of God’s people?”
During World War II, a marine unit was patrolling in the jungles of the Philippines. One of those was Private Jacob Ingersol. Ingersol and two other marines were given strict instructions to “stick” together. They were suddenly attacked by a Japanese patrol and in the intense fighting he lost touch and contact with his comrades. Alone in the jungle, he could hear enemy soldiers coming in his direction. Scrambling for cover, he found his way up a high ridge to several small caves in the rock. Quickly he crawled inside one of the caves. Although safe for the moment, he realized that once the enemy soldiers looking for him swept up the ridge, they would quickly search all the caves and he would be captured or killed. As he waited, he prayed, “Lord, if it be your will, please protect me. Whatever your will though, I love you and trust you. Amen.” After praying, he lay quietly listening to the enemy begin to draw close. He thought, well, I guess the Lord is not going to help me out of this one! I should have stayed closer to the others. Then he noticed in the corner of the front of the cave, he saw a spider begin to build a web. As he watched, listening to the enemy searching for him all the while, the spider layered strand after strand of web across the opening of the cave. He thought, what I need is a brick wall and what the Lord has sent me is spider web. God does have a sense of humor! As the enemy drew closer he watched from the darkness of his hideout and could now see them searching one cave after another. As they came to his, he got ready to make his last stand. To his amazement, however, after glancing in the direction of his cave, they moved on. Suddenly, he realized that with the spider web over the entrance, his cave looked as if no one had entered for quite a while. “Lord, forgive me,” prayed the young man. “I had forgotten that in you a spider’s web is stronger than a brick wall.” We all face times of great trouble. When we do, it is so easy to forget the victories that God would work in our lives, sometimes in the most surprising ways. As the great leader, Nehemiah, reminded the people of Israel when they faced the task of rebuilding Jerusalem, “In God we will have success!” (Nehemiah 2:20)
One of the reasons for Nehemiah’s success was that they worked together! They bonded together with one purpose—build the wall and rebuild their lives. And should we get separated from the body of Christ—even if the separation is due to our own mistakes, God will not abandon us—if we would seek Him!! Whatever is happening in your life, with God, a mere spider’s web can become a brick wall of protection. Believe He is with you always!!

NOTES
Today has been mostly cloudy with a high temperature of 87 degrees and a low temperature of 73 degrees. I attended Worship Services this morning and it was another wonderful service. I had lunch at home. I sat outside for a few minutes before my afternoon nap. Emmy took a nap with me this afternoon. I put treats outside for the cats at 4:45 p.m. I watched part of the Lawrence Welk show until I had to leave for church. I attended church tonight. After I came home from church at 7:15 p.m. I sat outside with my babies for 30 minutes. I then ate a bite of supper, put the garbage out for pick up in the morning and then started the Good Things. I love to send out the Word of God on the Good Things. That is why I feel that I cannot stop them. I really don't think the Lord would be pleased if I stopped them. I sometimes think it would have been better if I had never gotten a computer but then I wouldn't have all you wonderful e-mail friends, many I have never met in person. I had to get a computer when I did income taxes for a few years. I never hear from some people who receive the Good Things but they haven't told me to drop them so I will continue to send them to everyone. I do appreciate your e-mails and if you are reading this I really appreciate you. I have always believed in angels. Two years ago this month I saw my wife walking down the street. She had been gone for two years. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that it was my dear Flonnie. I subscribe to "Angels on Earth" magazine. I think that I have time to type you another cat story from an "Angels On Earth" magazine from three years ago. I will leave it at the end of the Good Things. If you would like to be dropped from Good Things, send me an e-mail.
The cats are fine. Rascal has been on the desk near me for a while but he just now left. Little Girl is on the sofa. I have seen all of the cats this evening.
I will see you next time,

THE CAT MADE HOUSE CALLS
By Kathy Lynn Lebo, Carlisle, Pennsylvania
Mom never complained, but it was obvious she was physically uncomfortable. She'd reached the end stages of lung cancer, and my sister and I worried there was really nothing we could do to comfort her. Except, of course, pray.
One morning my sister noticed a scraggly cat out on the patio and let him in. We followed him through the house, down the halllway and right into Mom's bedroom where he laid down against her side.
Mom turned her head to the four-legged visitor and smiled. The cat kneaded the bed with his big, soft paws and we noticed he had six toes on each foot. "That cat's stomping up a storm!" Dad laughed. The cat had its name: Stomper.
Stomper spent his days nuzzled up to Mom, rarely leaving her alone. Mom rested better and seemed more comfortable in general.
A friend came by one day to visit. "You've really got a little soul mate there, don't you?" she said, nodding to Stomper, curled up with Mom. " You have no idea," Mom said. "I was born with an extra digit on each hand, just like his, but my parents had them removed." Until then, I'd never heard the story.
When Mom died, Stomper took a new place by my father's side. That cat had brought Mom comfort. Now it was Dad's turn.

GOD SPEAKS TO US THROUGH HIS HOLY WORD
(Jesus said) 21 “Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or, ‘Look, He is there!’ do not believe it. 22 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 23 But take heed; see, I have told you all things beforehand." - Mark 13:21-23(New King James Version).
GOD'S PROMISE TO US FROM HIS HOLY WORD
34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." - John 8:34-36(New International Version).

NOTES
I know I mentioned last night that the Good Things might rest tonight but I feel just as well doing this as sitting in my recliner. I feel pretty good tonight. The day has been partly cloudy with a high temperature of 88 degrees and a low temperature of 66 degrees. My house cleaning lady came at 11:15 a.m. and cleaned my house while I had lunch with Charley and Bill. I went to the post office and the cemetery. I sat outside a few minutes before I took my nap. I took my nap in early afternoon. At 4:00 p.m. I went to Country Mart store for a few items. I used several coupons which they doubled. I sat outside with the cats from 5:45 to 7:00 p.m. this evening. I am not a poet but I have tried to write a few poems. While I was sitting outside this evening I wrote a poem which I will leave at the end of the Good Things. I may try to submit it to www.wordchimes.com and see if they will use it on their website. I always appreciate your e-mails and don't feel bad if I don't answer them personally.
The cats are fine. Little Girl is here in the den with me at present. She is eating some dry food. I have seen all of the cats this evening except Leo and he will probably be in a little later. It is not unusal for him to stay out late.
I hope everyone has a Wonderful Sunday!
I will see you next time.

Here is the poem:
AN OLD MAN AND HIS CATS.
By Everett Christian
Written May 5, 2012
He sits there every evening in the back yard lawn chair.
The setting sun reflecting on the white color of his hair.
He is all alone with his memories of days that used to be.
How he married a sweet young lady and raised their children three.
Now his sweet wife has gone to Heaven, they couldn't even say goodbye.
As God took her from her easy chair to her home up in the sky.
Sixty-two years they lived together through the sun, the rain, the snow.
Their children grew up and left them then she would watch her flowers grow.
Now he sits alone in silence, but wait what's that you see?
There's a cat in a chair beside him and another just left his knee.
There are cats of every color with names they understand.
He will keep them all forever, even to the promised land.
Someday soon he will see Jesus in that land beyond the sky.
His dear wife there to meet him where people never die.
So he sits there every evening with nothing left to do.
Just a sitting and a thinking till his earthly days are through.
