Advent
By Quentin Clingerman, Monrovia, MD
On the Christian Church calendar the beginning of Advent was today (Nov. 29). The Sundays before Christmas Day are given to emphasize the coming of Jesus to Earth from His place in Heaven as the Second of the Triune God.
What wonderful celebration of the greatest, yet most humble birth in human history. It has inspired common men and women and children to give attention to Eternal matters even this side of Eternity.
It has inspired artists, sculptors, songwriters, philosophers, authors, musicians to produce some of the most beautiful works of art ever made.
Many, many Heads of States have through the centuries recognized the importance of Christmas. Some still do! At one time the USA government recognized the essential message of Christmas and it is still seen in our postage stamps and nativity scene on the lawn near the White House.
Proclaiming the Birth of Christ is a tremendously joyful activity. Showing His love for a needy world in many ways is also a joyful way to celebrate His birth. Whether it is sending cards to our troops or giving to the Salvation Army or other organizations that care for the needy, or visiting shutins or others who cannot "get out" into general society, or sharing the good news of His birth with someone else; it tells the world that Christ's birth changed the world.
The question is: Is my world changed for the better? Is your world changed for the better? Are we truly celebrating the One who came to bring "peace on Earth, goodwill to men"?
